Las bodas hindúes son acontecimientos repletos de simbolismo, colorido y rituales sagrados que simbolizan la unión entre dos familias. Estas ceremonias difieren mucho del concepto de boda occidental y varían mucho según la región, la casta y la familia que las celebre.
En la cultura hindú las bodas simbolizan una unión entre familias más que un mero enlace entre un hombre y una mujer.
La importancia de la unión familiar vuelve a simbolizarse en un curioso ritual llamado Barat, que se produce el día previo a la boda, y en el que el novio junto con sus familiares y amigos realiza una procesión a caballo hasta la casa de su futura esposa demostrando el respeto y unión que existirá entre ambas familias.
Uno de los mayores atractivos de las bodas hindúes son las vestimentas de los novios e invitados a la ceremonia. El novio suele vestir un traje repleto de coloridos bordados, y la novia acostumbra a lucir un vestido rojo con adornos de oro, ( aunque a día de hoy la moda cambia )conocido como sari, aunque durante la boda es normal que se cambie varias veces de vestido. Además, las mujeres cercanas a la novia pintan con henna sus manos y pies creando bellos símbolos y mosaicos que incluyen las iniciales del novio. El vestido y los adornos se complementan con decenas de joyas que dan un toque de grandiosidad y lujo a la celebración.
